Our cleaning course is designed to help you take your first step into the cleaning profession, building the essential skills and knowledge you need to succeed in a wide range of cleaning roles across different sectors.
Portland’s Explore Your Potential – Cleaning course introduces you to the core duties and responsibilities of a professional cleaner, including safe working practices, cleaning methods and equipment, hygiene standards, and time management. You’ll also develop your communication and teamwork skills—key to working effectively in any cleaning role.
This course runs for 5 days (Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm) and provides a supportive, hands-on introduction to the cleaning industry. It’s ideal for anyone looking to build confidence, return to work, or begin a new career in a high-demand sector.

You must be aged 19+, unemployed and in receipt of government benefits or employed and earning less than the threshold amount.
Threshold Amounts:
- Non-Devolved (National)- £25,000
Must be a full-time resident in the UK and meet other residency criteria.
Initial Assessments in English and Maths and other eligibility checks will be carried out at enrolment.
This course will taught using a range of practical and theoretical units. Assessment criteria will include practical assessments, written assessments and the completion of a portfolio.
If you meet the entry requirement criteria, this course may be fully funded. Meaning you may not have to pay anything.
Portland Training may also be able to access a Learner Support Fund to offer financial support for learners who are facing financial hardship to help pay for things that are not covered in the course funding, such as travel to and from the course venue.

This course prepares you for a variety of entry-level roles within the cleaning industry, including:
Domestic cleaner
Commercial or office cleaner
School or healthcare cleaning operative
Industrial or specialist cleaning assistant
You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of what employers expect, along with the confidence and practical skills to apply for cleaning roles across different settings.
It can also be a stepping stone to further training in areas such as Health and Safety, COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health), or Facilities Management at Level 1 or Level 2.
