Our construction courses are designed to help you find meaningful employment in the construction industry, providing you with industry specific knowledge, practical skills and qualifications.
Portland’s Further Your Potential In Construction courses provide you with a level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment qualification, enabling you to obtain your CSCS card. You’ll receive your CSCS card free of charge as we cover the price of the card and CITB touch screen test.
This comprehensive construction course runs for 5 days (Monday to Friday 9am – 4pm), and will provide you with a pathway into the construction industry, allowing you to obtain your green CSCS card and get on site as soon as possible.
Portland Training has a commitment to providing impartial Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) for all learners to help them make informed decisions on their own future.
As part of your enrolment process, you will have access to designated IAG staff to provide you with the support needed to help you make an informed decision regarding this course, making sure this it is right for you.

Level 1 Award in Health and Safety within a Construction Environment

Our postcode checker will then confirm whether you live in a funded area. (when asked, please only enter the first half of your postcode. For example, if your postcode is ‘E12 1AB’, you would only enter E12)
You must be aged 19+, unemployed and in receipt of government benefits or employed and earning less than the threshold amount.
Threshold Amounts:
- South Yorkshire –£23,400
- York & North Yorksire –£25,000
- Non-Devolved (National)- £25,000
Must be a full-time resident in the UK and meet other residency criteria.
Initial Assessments in English and Maths and other eligibility checks will be carried out at enrolment.
This course will taught using a range of practical and theoretical units. Assessment criteria will include practical assessments, written assessments and the completion of a portfolio.
If you meet the entry requirement criteria, this course may be fully funded. Meaning you may not have to pay anything.
Portland Training may also be able to access a Learner Support Fund to offer financial support for learners who are facing financial hardship to help pay for things that are not covered in the course funding, such as travel to and from the course venue.

The Further Your Potential in Construction course is designed for people who would like to pursue a career in construction. The course equips learners with the basic skills to find employment on construction sites.

As part of this course, you will receive impartial advice and support as part of Portland Training’s ongoing Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) provision to enable you to make informed decisions on your future.
You will be assigned a designated Employment & Progression officer whos job it is to offer impartial support and guidance on your next steps. You will also receive ongoing employability training, including important training such as, interview techniques and CV writing.
We also work with a range of local employers to help our learners gain employment on completion of their course.
