CITB Grant Changes: What Employers Need to Know Before January 2026

CITB Grant

CITB has announced upcoming changes to its grant scheme which will reduce the funding available for certain NVQs from 1 January 2026. Currently, Supervisor (Gold CSCS) and Manager (Black CSCS) NVQs attract enhanced grants of up to £1,500, but from the start of 2026 these will be reduced to £600. Employers who want to access the higher level of funding must ensure their learners complete their NVQs before 31 December 2025. This blog explains the CITB grant changes, what they mean for construction businesses, and how Portland Training can help you take advantage of the current enhanced rates.

Understanding the CITB Grant Changes

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) provides funding support to employers across the construction sector, helping businesses cover the cost of staff training and recognised qualifications. These grants are designed to support skills development, improve safety standards, and create long-term benefits for both employees and employers.

However, from 1 January 2026, important CITB grant changes will come into effect that specifically affect Supervisor (Gold CSCS) and Manager (Black CSCS) NVQs. At present, these qualifications are eligible for enhanced grants, meaning employers can claim back significantly more than the standard rate.

From 2026, these NVQs will no longer qualify for the enhanced grant and will revert to the standard payment of £600 per learner.

Current vs Future Grant Rates

To understand the impact of these changes, it is helpful to look at the current funding levels compared to the rates that will apply from January 2026:

Supervisor NVQs
(Example: Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision)

  • Current grant: £1,250
  • Grant from 1 January 2026: £600

Manager NVQs
(Example: Level 6 Construction Site Management)

  • Current grant: £1,500
  • Grant from 1 January 2026: £600

This reduction represents a significant drop in the support available to employers. For many businesses, this could mean the difference between training being cost-neutral and training requiring a substantial financial outlay.

Why the Deadline Matters

Employers still have time to take advantage of the higher grant payments, but action is required soon. In order to qualify for the enhanced grant, all NVQs must be fully completed by 31 December 2025.

That means employers who are considering training their supervisors or managers should act quickly to enrol their staff and ensure assessments are completed before the deadline. Leaving it too late could result in missing out on funding worth hundreds of pounds per learner.

Preparing for the Future

While the CITB grant changes may appear challenging, they also provide an opportunity to plan ahead. Employers who prioritise training before the end of 2025 will not only benefit from higher grant payments but will also strengthen their workforce with qualified supervisors and managers.

Investing in NVQs now means your business will be better positioned to handle future projects, meet compliance requirements, and demonstrate a commitment to professional development.

Take Action Today

The CITB grant changes coming in January 2026 will significantly reduce the funding available for Supervisor and Manager NVQs. Employers only have until 31 December 2025 to access the enhanced grant payments of £1,250 and £1,500. After that, all such NVQs will be capped at £600.

Do not miss this opportunity to train your workforce at a fraction of the usual cost. Contact Portland Training today to discuss your NVQ requirements and ensure your team benefits from the enhanced CITB grants before the deadline.
