What is a Blue CSCS Card & Why Do You Need One?

The Blue CSCS Card, also known as the Skilled Worker Card, shows that someone has both the experience and qualifications to carry out skilled work on UK construction sites.

No Blue CSCS Card will mean you will mean you are limited to the work you can get on construction sites. Therefore it’s seen as a smart investment for anybody looking to secure their career and open new doors to better work opportunities.

If you’re skilled but not qualified, you’re not alone.

This is common for people working across the construction industry:

  • You’ve been on the tools for years
  • You know the trade inside out
  • But you haven’t got the paperwork to prove it…yet.

For construction companies, it’s the same story: good workers, solid experience, but no NVQ Level 2 and that limits the jobs you can take on as a team.

How to get a Blue CSCS Card Step-By-Step

Here’s how to get your Blue CSCS Card, no classroom, no college, no nonsense:

Find an Approved Training Provider

In order to get your NVQ level 2, you will need to find an approved training provider like Portland training. In this process, the training provider will guide you through funding options, help you book your CITB test and support you with the Blue CSCS Card application.

Get Your NVQ Level 2 Through On-Site Assessment

If you’re already working in your trade, an assessor can come to your site and assess you doing your day job. This is called On-Site Assessment and Training.

  • No off the job studying
  • No exams
  • No need to spend time away from work

You just need to show what you do day-to-day, and the assessor builds evidence from that.

Pass The CITB Health & Safety Test

This is a 45-minute touchscreen test you take which checks you understand the basics of site safety – standard requirement for all CSCS Cards.

Apply For The Blue CSCS Card

Once you’ve completed your NVQ Level 2, and passed your CITB test, you can apply for the Blue CSCS Card. This currently costs £36.

Why you should Act Now

Industry rules are tightening. Major sites are moving towards having everybody fully qualified in their role. Meaning you will need to own a CSCS Card to work on site, and many are making the Blue CSCS Card the minimum for skilled roles.
