A Guide to the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card

In the construction industry, a CSCS card is an important credential that employers look for when hiring workers. While not a legal requirement, most employers these days will not hire a construction worker without a CSCS card. There are different types of CSCS cards, each corresponding to a different level of training and experience. As there are many types of card, it is easy to get confused about what each of them mean, or how to acquire them. So without further ado, here’s everything you need to know about the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card.

Overview of the Blue CSCS Card.

A CSCS card is a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card that allows an individual to work on construction sites in the United Kingdom. The card is issued by the CSCS and allows the holder to demonstrate that they have the required skills and training to work safely on a construction site.  These cards come in a range of colours and types, indicating varying levels of skills and experience. The most common card for beginners is a Green Labourers CSCS card, while Gold or Black CSCS cards are for managers and supervisors who are responsible for other workers. The Blue CSCS card, also known as the Skilled Worker card has stricter requirements than the Green Card and demands a higher level of skill and experience. However, it is usually not enough to be able to supervise others with a Blue Skilled Worker Card.

To be eligible for a Blue CSCS card, individuals must meet certain eligibility requirements. These include,

– have completed an approved construction qualification (Level 2 NVQ or an equivalent qualification)

– have at least one year’s experience working in construction

– pass the CSCS health, safety and environment test (also known as the CTIB touch screen test)

The benefits of having a Blue CSCS card

There are many benefits to having a Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card. Workers with a Blue CSCS card are seen as more employable. The eligibility requirements mean that anyone with the card has proof of their skills and experience. It also means they have undergone rigorous health and safety training and are less likely to cause an accident on-site. For the same reason, workers with a Blue CSCS card often earn higher wages than those without.

Another upside to having a Blue skilled worker CSCS card is the sense of accomplishment that comes with it. Construction workers tend to take pride in their work and to see it as an important part of their identity. The blue card is a mark of competence and excellence that you can wear with pride!

How to get your blue CSCS card

In order to get your Blue CSCS card, you must complete a level 2 NVQ (or a valid equivalent). So first, decide which NVQ you would like to do. It should be an area in which you are already competent, so think about what you do on-site. If you do several things that you could get an NVQ in, don’t worry as your chosen training provider, such as Portland Training can help you choose which is the best option for you. You can see a full list of available NVQs here: Level 2 NVQs – Portland Training

After you complete your NVQ, you can apply for your Blue CSCS card. This is as simple as visiting the official CSCS website and completing the online application form. You’ll need to have a couple of documents ready: a scanned copy of your qualification certificate, the ID number from your HS&E test, and a credit/debit card to pay the £36 application fee. Shortly afterwards, your Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card will arrive in the post and you will be good to go.

How long does a Blue CSCS card last?

The Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card will last for 5 years, after which you will need to renew. However, you won’t need to undertake any more training or NVQs, you will simply need to go through the process of applying for the card again through the CSCS. As before, you will need to provide evidence of your NVQ assessment and your CITB health, safety & environment test. Although the CITB HS&E test doesn’t have an expiry date, it is common for card renewals to require an HS&E test to have been passed within the last 2 years, so please check this before applying as requirements can often change.

What’s next after the Blue CSCS card?

The next logical step for someone who has been a skilled worker for a while would be to move into a supervisor or manager role, and have responsibility for supervising others on site. To make this step, you would need to undertake further NVQ assessments at either levels 3, 4 or 6, depending on the route you want to take. After completion of the training, you would be ready to apply for either the Gold Supervisors CSCS card or Black Managers CSCS card, depending on your chosen path. Again, working with a trusted training provider, such as Portland Training is really useful at this stage as they will be able to support you through the process, making sure you get exactly what you need to progress.

Conclusion

The Blue Skilled Worker CSCS Card is an important marker of skill in the construction industry. There are many reasons to apply for one, such as improved employability, better earning potential and simple pride and accomplishment. If you are already an experienced worker, applying for a blue CSCS card is a straightforward process.
