Disability Pride Month: Spotlight Session

Disability Pride Month

To round off the end of Disability Pride Month, last Friday, our dedicated Events, Charity, and Volunteering Champions organised a spotlight session to inform, engage and spread awareness. The initiative aimed to shed light on the experiences and perspectives of individuals with disabilities while fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity and understanding among our staff.

The turnout for the session was remarkable, with our staff actively participating and engaging in meaningful discussions. This broad discussion allowed us to recognize the importance of adapting our practices to cater to the diverse needs of our learners and colleagues with disabilities.

During the session, we learned that an estimated 13% of our Adult Education Budget (AEB) learners have some form of disability. Among the various disabilities discussed, it was noted that dyslexia stood out as the most common.

One of the most thought-provoking segments of the event was the dyslexia simulation session. During this experiential learning exercise, we actively participated in tasks designed to replicate the challenges faced by those with dyslexia. This immersive experience allowed us to gain first-hand insight into the obstacles and frustrations that individuals with dyslexia may encounter in their daily lives. Our tutors also shared their experiences with dyslexia, which was insightful and helpful for us to learn more.

The disability pride month spotlight session holds great significance in our ongoing commitment to raising awareness about disabilities and promoting inclusivity in all facets of our organization. The knowledge and understanding gained from this event will equip us to be more sensitive and responsive to the diverse needs of our learners, ensuring that we uphold an inclusive learning environment for everyone.
