Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG): What It Is, Why We Do It

IAG

IAG is a critical strategy for Portland Training. It defines what we do, why we do it and how we do it. Our approach to IAG is not just about talking the talk but also walking the walk, we embed it into every part of our organisation – from how we work with our learners, to how we engage with stakeholders, to the way we design our offerings.

What is Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG)?

Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) is a term used to describe the range of services offered by advisers to support people in making informed choices about their learning and work.

IAG can include giving information about different options and courses, providing advice on what might suit an individual’s needs and circumstances, and giving guidance on the process of applying for jobs or courses. It can also involve signposting people to other services that can support them.

The aim of IAG is to empower people to make informed choices about their learning and work, which can lead to improved life chances and employment outcomes. IAG services are therefore an essential part of what we do here at Portland Training by supporting our learners to progress in their careers and reach their full potential.

Why do we use IAG?

There are many reasons why we use IAG in our work with learners. Here are some of the most important ones:

IAG helps us to get a clear understanding of our learners’ goals and objectives. By asking questions and probing deeper, IAG allows us to really understand what it is that our learners want to achieve.

IAG also provides a framework for structuring our advice and recommendations. This ensures that we always keep our learner’s goals at the forefront of our minds and that we provide them with coherent and actionable advice.

IAG helps us to build trust with our learners. Our learners know that we have their best interests at heart and that we’re not just trying to sell them something.

IAG also saves our learners time and money. By helping them to focus on their goals and identify the most efficient path to achieve them, IAG can help our learners avoid costly mistakes or wasted effort.

How do we introduce IAG into our organisation culture?

IAG is about understanding and then improving the systems within which we work. It’s a way of thinking that helps us to see how our actions impact on the wider world, and to make sure that what we do is in line with our values and goals.

We introduced IAG into Portland Training by developing an IAG strategy, which sets out our approach to embedding IAG across the organisation. We then cascade this down through the organisation, so that everyone is aware of what IAG is and how it can be used to improve their work.

We hold regular training sessions and workshops on IAG, so that staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to put it into practice. And we provide ongoing support to help people embed IAG in their day-to-day work.

The benefits of introducing IAG into our organisation are already starting to be felt. By taking an IAG approach, we’re able to make better decisions, improve efficiency, and deliver better outcomes for the people we serve.

What are the benefits of IAG at Portland Training?

There are countless benefits to providing Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) in any organisation. Perhaps the most obvious is that it helps individuals make informed choices about their future; whether that’s what course to study, which job to apply for or which company to work for.

Ultimately, at Portland Training, IAG is all about empowering people to reach their full potential. It’s an essential part of our forward-thinking organisation and one that can bring numerous benefits – both tangible and intangible.

Proud to be Matrix accredited

Matrix Accreditation is a national quality assurance scheme for organisations who provide information, advice and guidance (IAG). Matrix Accreditation is designed to improve the quality of IAG services, and to give individuals the confidence that they are receiving a good service. To become accredited, organisations must meet a set of standards covering areas such as client care, governance and safeguarding. Organisations that hold Matrix Accreditation are inspected every three years to ensure they are maintaining the required standards.

Portland Training is proud to be a matrix accredited company. Getting the right information and support is extremely important for anyone looking to change their situation. That’s why for us, IAG is fundamental to how we organise our processes.
