What it Means to be a ‘Mindful Employer’

Mindful employer

There’s a lot of talks these days about mental health, and how we should look after it. But generally, this advice is about things we can do in our personal time. There is plenty of advice about how to decompress after work, but little for employers, on how not to ‘compress’ their staff in the first place.

This is where Mindful Employer steps in. Mindful Employers believe that if we spend half of our waking lives at work, we should not be unhappy!

So what is a Mindful Employer?

Mindful Employer is a national initiative supporting employers to take a positive approach towards mental health at work. By signing the Mindful Employer charter employers can make a public declaration of their ambition to support the mental wellbeing of their staff.

The Mindful Employer Charter

As a Mindful Employer, we have signed a charter promising;

  • To support staff struggling with mental health issues
  • To not discriminate because of mental health in the hiring process
  • To have staff trained in dealing properly with mental health issues
  • To generally look out for employees’ mental well-being at work

Being a Mindful Employer in Practice

It’s reported that 1 in 6 workers are currently dealing with a mental health problem, such as anxiety, depression or a stress-related illness. That’s why here at Portland Training we take our staff’s well-being and our commitment to being a Mindful Employer so seriously. We have joined the likes of Toyota, Reed and Asda in becoming a registered Mindful Employer.

At Portland Training, being a Mindful Employer is much more than just another accolade, it’s ingrained into what we believe and do every day. We actively promote good mental health practices throughout our workforce. We have a very diverse and inclusive workforce and we have a zero-tolerance approach to any form of discrimination. At Portland Training, we believe in listening to our staff and treating them with the respect they deserve. This is why we always score highly on staff feedback questionnaires.
